My Earthly Prize
14th February 2012 – Valentines’ Day. It is 8am and I have just dropped the kids in school. They were so excited this morning because they had all their gifts and cards ready for their classmates and teachers.
Just the night before, while cuddling in bed, Ethan pretended to find a Valentines’ Day card on the bed and passed it to me. Of course, it was from him and in it he wrote: “Dear mom, happy Valentines’ Day! You are my sunshine. From: Ethan”.
Sitting here at Starbucks, I cannot help but feel blessed to have them in my life.
My thoughts also brought me back to the same Valentines’ Day in 2001. It was at the Meritus Mandarin Singapore Hotel (now known as the Mandarin Orchard Hotel). Derek and I were celebrating my birthday cum Valentine’s Day when in the midst of the dinner, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. And of course, I said YES!
After knowing Derek for 4 years and dating for 8 months, our relationship was ready to enter into the next level with his marriage proposal to me – it felt like I have won the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.
And what an awesome prize Derek is! I am not just saying that because he is a pastor or for the fact that he is good looking (at least to me he is!).
Derek is a honorable man who lives his life not by the standard of others but by the standard of God and His Word. He loves freely and is not afraid to show it. He is courageous and upholds truth in every aspect of his life. His spirit of excellence has seen him being promoted quickly in every work that he ever got involved in.
This is my 11th year being married to this man and I will say that I am now more in love with him and respect him more than ever. He has continuously lived by what he knows is right according to the Word of God and has not let anything or anyone moved him to do otherwise. He is indeed a man of great character and courage.
My Eternal Prize
That night after having accepted Derek’s proposal, I went home and got down on my knees before my Abba Father. I remembered crying before God not because “I got the ring!” but because my heart was overwhelmed with love and gratitude. I know that in this, My Father and I have won the battle together.
Remember the prayer I made in 1995? I told Him that I want Him to be my Matchmaker and to make me a living proof that He is faithful and He is more than able to do this for me. That prayer started a journey that was liberating and at times (many times) painful.
But all that has passed and the prize of having Derek in my life and the more precious Prize of knowing My Father through this victory is all worth it!
The victory of proving that HE CARES that I married the right man!
The victory of proving that HE IS ABLE to bring that person despite the odds and the statistics!
The victory of proving that HIS Word is TRUE and is POWERFUL to change the course of my life!
Having encountered God through this journey and seeing before my eyes His Word becoming a reality, it has given me an insight into the faithfulness of my God and has elevated my faith to a whole new level.
The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”.
He has indeed devoured many women of God in the area of marriage. He has robbed many who are married the fruits of their womb. The divorce rate among Christian marriages is equally high compared to non-Christian couples.
The Church world is under intense pressure to compromise in these areas.
Premarital intercourse is tolerated because “it is better to know if you are sexually compatible before you get married then to end up divorced when you realized you are not”.
Singles are getting attached or marrying non- believing partners with the hope that they will eventually come to Christ. They say, “It is better that they are married rather than allowing them to start getting bitter with the church and with God.”
Divorce is becoming acceptable because “God will understand”, it is better to divorce now rather than end up committing adultery later.
Indeed, there are cases where women have no better options such as marrying a non-believing partner because she is pregnant with his baby or ending up in a divorce because the other spouse wanted it to or simply having no access to the Word and Power of God before.
However , we need to know that though God still loves us and wants to bring the best out of these circumstances. Being trapped in such circumstances is not what He has desired for us.
I know that we are all a work in progress. I am a work in progress.
I know that we all make mistakes.
I have and still do make mistakes in life.
We all need grace. God knows I need an abundance of His grace.
The devil is out there to steal, kill and destroy; not just our relationships, our marriages and our families but most of all he is on a vengeance to destroy the Name of God, to render His Name in vain and to prove His Word powerless!
Will you stand with me today and redeem the name of our Beloved, Jesus Christ?
He did not die just so that we can go to Heaven when we die. He laid down His life so that just as He is the Word of God becoming flesh, you and I can be that walking testimony that He is Alive and that His Word is Everlasting! We can walk in His Power and tell the world that Christ in His Church has the answer.
Every man would want to marry a Christian woman because of the beauty and blessings that she brings to his life.Every marriage will be blissful because there is a Christian wife.Every family will prosper because there is a Christian mother working and praying at the same time.
The devil may be walking about to seek who he may devour but we have a God who is looking out for those that He can show Himself strong on his/her behalf.
2 Chronicles 16:9 – For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.
Are you one of them?
Will you allow Him to hold your hands just as He held mine?
Will you take up the mandate to clear His name and bring the Power and Glory back to the House of God?
If your answer is YES, I would like to get to know you and pray for you.

The Wedding – 13 October 2001
It was a beautiful wedding and we often joked that it was the most beautiful wedding we have ever attended. I think every couple who every got married would think that of their wedding day.
It was a special occasion for us because we knew God was there.
I have attached a video clip to share the special moments with all of you.
Ephesians 5:31 – For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
Ecclesiastics 4:12 – Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
With this posting, it will end our series on “God is my Matchmaker”.
In a week’s time, I will share on what a Christian Marriage is all about.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
